All four of the other TS-series models also come with Bluetooth, and the Canon TS9120 ($149.99 at Walmart) supports Ethernet. You also get Wireless PictBridge for printing from specific Canon cameras, including certain digital video cameras.

Standard connectivity consists of Wi-Fi and connecting to a single PC via USB. Since the TS3120 is at the bottom of the Canon Pixma-TS-series pecking order, it has the fewest connectivity choices. Printing or scanning to cloud sites, for instance, are set up and executed from your smartphone or tablet through one of Canon's mobile apps. Most interaction will be through either your PC or mobile device. You use the panel primarily for setting up and monitoring functions, making copies, setting paper size and type, and so on. Instead of a tablet-like touch screen with icons that act as shortcuts for setting up and executing various functions and workflow profiles, the TS3120 comes with an entry-level control panel that consists of several buttons and a 1.5-inch "segment" monochrome LCD. Since you probably won't be printing many large documents, however, this shouldn't be that much of an inconvenience.

The Epson XP-440 ($309.99 at Amazon) can print two-sided pages without manual assistance. You have to turn your documents over manually to print on the other side. Like the HP 3755, the TS3120 can't print two-sided pages automatically (auto-duplexing) either. However, the TS3120 does not support photo paper larger than 5 by 7 inches you can't print borderless 8-by-10-inch photos, for example, much less larger sizes. The TS3120's paper tray can also be configured to hold up to 20 sheets of 4-by-6-inch premium photo paper, and up to 10 sheets of 5-by-7-inch photo paper, which is about the same as the other models mentioned here. The HP 3755, on the other hand, also holds only 60 sheets of paper, and the Epson XP-440's single tray holds up to 100 sheets. In addition to the entry-level ink system, the TS3120's minimal paper handling capacity of just one 60-sheet paper tray, compared with the Canon TS5020's ($164.99 at Amazon) and TS9120's two 100-sheet trays, places it securely in the entry-level column. HP now has several, including the HP DeskJet 3755 and the company's recent Envy Photo 7855 All-in-One ($229.99 at HP), a significantly more expensive and full-featured TS3120 competitor. In other words, the three-ink tanks are often wasteful.įor a while there, it looked like printer manufacturers were getting away from this type of two-cartridge ink system, but it appears to be coming back. Not only do these types of ink cartridges hold less ink than separate cartridges do, but with the three-ink color ink tank, the cartridge must be replaced when any of the three reservoirs empties-regardless of how much ink is left in the other two reservoirs. One tank holds the black ink, and the other holds the other three colors. Even so, most fit comfortably on the average desktop, and the TS3120 (and its competitors) are designed to close up easily, taking up as little space as possible while not in service.Īnother blatant giveaway that the TS3120 is a low-volume printer is that, instead of using a separate print cartridge for each of its four inks (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, or CMYK), it uses only two. The TS3120, for example, increases from 12.5 inches long to 21.8 inches, and HP's 3755 ($59.99 at HP) extends upward by about 5 inches and lengthens by over 10 inches. It's important to note that all of these entry-level printers increase significantly in depth and height with their input and output trays deployed. In addition, the Canon TS5020 uses five inks, whereas the TS3120 uses only four, making the former a better choice for printing photographs. The next TS-series model up, the Canon TS5020, measures about four inches wider and is almost twice as heavy. Measuring 5.8 by 12.5 by 17.2 inches (HWD) with its trays closed and weighing 8.5 pounds, very few AIOs are as small as the TS3120 ($239.30 at Amazon), except the HP DeskJet 3755 (5.6 by 15.9 by 7 inches and 5.1 pounds), though the Epson Expression Home XP-440 Small-in-One comes very close in size, and weighs only half a pound more. In that role, it's a lower-cost alternative to the Canon Pixma TS5020 or the significantly more-expensive Editors' Choice Canon Pixma TS9120 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One. Like the HP DeskJet 3755, the TS3120 is designed for families and homes that do very little printing and copying-a sort of there-when-you-need-it device. Not only is this one of the least-expensive consumer-grade photo all-in one (AIO) printers we've reviewed recently, it's also one of the smallest, slowest, and shortest on features.
The Canon Pixma TS3120 Wireless Inkjet All-in-One ($79.99) is one of very few inkjet printers with the distinction of a sub-$80 list price (and its street price of $49.99 means that you can actually buy it for less than $50, making it all the more unique).
